October reflection for Monsignor Chester Michael

(by Steven Ham)

Fr Chet was born in Berkeley Springs, WV. on October 17, 1916, and would celebrate his 99th birthday were he with us (physically) today.

The month of October is dedicated to the Holy Rosary, and we can recall that Fr Chet routinely recited 15 decades of the Holy Rosary during his early morning walks to the summit of Ennis Mountain, or to the bottom of the hill & back from his home in Afton. October 7 is the Memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary.

We also note that October 1 is the Memorial of St Therese of the Child Jesus, to whom Fr Chet had a special devotion. St Therese’ parents, Blessed Louis & Marie Zelie Guerin Martin, will be canonized at the Vatican on October 18 during the Synod of Bishops on the Family. They will be the first married couple to be canonized together.

Let us recall this month from Arise, A Christian Psychology of Love, “A mature person may be defined as one who has fully actualized his or her capability for love. Maturity, sanctity, wholeness refer to that situation in life where all our energies for love have been released and directed with the right priorities toward the greatest possible development of one’s true and inner self, toward other human beings, and toward God.”
